For the record, IMHO the - seemingly useless - cpu miner: should stay.
Here is an excerpt of #b-a log explaining the logic behind this position:

Transcript - edited for clarity:
02:30:33 punkman: removes cpumining functions
02:30:34 asciilifeform: punkman: lemme guess, snipped miner
02:30:42 asciilifeform: punkman: i actually must confess that i disagree
02:30:49 asciilifeform: this is, recall, a -reference- implementation
02:31:01 asciilifeform: punkman: hence ought to contain an example of miner.
02:31:07 asciilifeform: even if it is worthless in practice
02:31:29 asciilifeform: but idea being, if dropped on alpha centauri
with the RI,
ought to be able to start using bitcoin immediately
02:31:35 asciilifeform: this means miner is in.
02:32:06 decimation: asciilifeform: surely the miner need not be part of
the same binary turdball?
02:32:21 asciilifeform: decimation: sure, can be outside
02:32:35 asciilifeform: decimation: but imho it is unwise to throw away
satoshi's miner so lightly
02:32:47 decimation: aye, the cpu mining code can come with
02:33:03 asciilifeform: satoshi's miner is valuable for the same reason
as the rest of that piece of shit
02:33:06 punkman: asciilifeform: yeah I'm not sure it should be removed,
the foundation shall decide. it was good for practice
anyway
02:33:16 asciilifeform: i.e. it was written before bitcoin was valuable.

Or, alternatively, decimation's idea - retain satoshi-era miner as
a stand-alone proggy?
