This perl script (v0.0.9) will download the following patches and apply
them to the v0.5.3 bitcoin source:

0x1] bitcoin-asciilifeform.1.patch
0x2] rm_rf_upnp.patch
0x3] bitcoin-asciilifeform.2-https_snipsnip.patch
0x4] bitcoin-asciilifeform.3-turdmeister-alert-snip.patch
0x5] bitcoin-asciilifeform.4-goodbye-win32.patch
0x6] bitcoin-v0_5_3-db_config.6.patch
0x7] bitcoin-v0_5_3_1-rev_bump.7.patch
0x8] bitcoin-v0_5_3_1-static_makefile.8.patch

You will need to change the $HOME variable on line 41 to where you want to
dir to build & patch your bitcoin source at.

NOTE: This script requires that you have `gnupg' and `curl' installed to
your local environment.

Once you've run this successfully and it has applied all 8 patches, you can
then run the (patched) `auto.sh' script to build a static binary.  Look here
